Recommended for: total beginners that have a technical background or are not bothered by it.

This was the very first book I bought about Joomla! It starts from the bottom up, giving you a list of terms that you need to know in order to understand the "Joomla! Jargon."

It is very organised, very easy to read and it reminds you of one of those quick reference pocket books that you can check in a hurry to see where you are at, or if you just forgot "what something was called."

If you have a technical background, this is the kind of book that you might want to read "for starters", as an hors d'oeuvre - because it is for beginners after all! I read it cover to cover (unusual for a text book) in one morning and went right away to do my first Joomla! Installation.

I particularly liked the sections Room for Improvement in the first chapters; they give you, in a very concise way, the low-down about the "code you might want to tweak or redo" if you are a programmer/developer, or the "issues you might want to deal with" by finding the appropriate extensions, if you are just a user.

I found the Must-have Extensions and Useful Resources sections extremely useful. After some months of using Joomla! you might agree or disagree with those recommendations, but really, you must have something to begin with!

Now the author does state that he assumes "...[the reader has] some level of web design and development understanding." So be aware that if your level about web design / development is low or non-existent this book will not teach you that. Just do not panic, you might want to look for basic books about that before attempting, for example, to build a custom template.

Complaints: it's not the Joomla! Bible! I bought other books after this one ;-)
